In 2001 while attending Simon Fraser University, dan moved in with high school friend Emma pierce. Dan's first ever band in high school was formed with emma on vocals called FORMICA. While living with Emma, dan was learning to finger pick on guitar, and with influences like Calexico, Nick Drake, and Jim Orourke he started to write songs in this style. Sitting in their living room Emma encouraged dan to start singing by singing together, and Dan discovered his voice and got over the self consciousness of singing aloud for people. The duo started to play shows around Vancouver and fellow kelowna friend JON RAY FLETCHER released this album on his label at the time DEER AND BIRD RECORDS. The album was recorded in dan and emma's living room on a 2 track nagra tape machine and produced by Jay Doulard. The title ITS ALL SORT OF A JOKE referred to how some of the early songs were sang almost in jest as part of dan's way of getting over a fear of singing for people. The tracks are raw and basic, but it is a interesting look at the start of a music career.
